Your numbers live here and nowhere else. Every other screen reads from this page, so you type each figure once.

Open it

How to use it

  1. Name the business.
  2. Pick your trade.
  3. Set where the shop is. The location drives the weather on the Overview and the wet days on Lost revenue.
  4. Type the figures: monthly fixed costs, daily labor cost, average sale, average unit cost, days open a month, and customers on a normal day.
  5. Hover over the information icon beside each figure to see what counts.
  6. Pick a currency. Every amount in the back office follows it.
  7. Pick a folder to keep your files in. The picker exists in Chrome and Edge on a computer; Safari, Firefox and iPad browsers do not have it, and show no folder option.
  8. Put that folder inside Google Drive, iCloud or Dropbox. The backup is then free and automatic.
  9. Paste a Gemini key if you want review replies drafted.
  10. Press Save a backup file before you change devices. One file holds your figures, items, customers and the ledger. On an iPad it opens the share sheet, so the file can go to Files, iCloud Drive or an email to yourself.
  11. Press Restore from a backup file on the new device. The older Export data and Download a copy files restore too.

What it does

  • Your ledger on more than one device: off, your ledger is in this browser and nowhere else, which is how the free back office has always worked. On, each device encrypts its ledger with a key made from a passphrase you choose, and we store bytes we cannot read. Entries made on both devices are kept.
  • If you forget that passphrase, your synced ledger is gone. We cannot reset it and we cannot recover it, because a reset we could perform would mean we held a key — and then we would be holding your takings. Write it down somewhere you keep important things, not on the tablet.
  • The passphrase is asked for once each time you open the browser and is never stored. Switching the sync off deletes everything we hold and leaves this device’s ledger exactly as it is.
  • If two devices logged different takings for the same day, the newer figure is used and the screen tells you which days disagreed and what the other figure was. The two are never added together: that would double your takings and look like growth.
  • Your customers’ data: how long you keep a customer you never see again, three years by default, counted from their last visit. We tell you 30 days before anybody is deleted, and how many. Nothing is deleted while the shared card is off, because those customers are on this device and we never had them.
  • The data processing agreement: what KANJIN may do with your customers’ data, who else touches it and what happens when you leave. Read it and accept it here; the date is kept on your record. Some shops need to be able to show that date.
  • Your calculator figures: if you used one of the free calculators in this browser before you signed up, Settings asks once whether to use the numbers you typed. It shows them first, and a no is remembered. They never left your browser either way.
  • The shared customer card: off, your stamp card lives on this device and nowhere else. On, your customer list is kept on KANJIN’s servers, and the kiosk, the poster’s QR code and each customer’s own card page start working. It is free for up to 150 customers. Your ledger, your figures and every calculator stay on this device either way. Switching it off stops anything new being sent; it deletes nothing.
  • Kiosk tablet: pair the tablet by the register from this screen, on that tablet. Paired tablets are listed with when they were last used, and Unpair takes one off the list. Pairing and unpairing are the owner’s to do, because a paired tablet is trusted by the kiosk without anybody signing in on it.
  • Your logo and colour, on the paid plan, under the shared card. Upload a logo (PNG, JPG, WEBP or SVG, up to 512 KB) and pick one colour. Your kiosk shows the logo above the headline, and each customer’s stamp card shows it above your name and stamps their card in your colour. One colour and one logo, not a theme — a card that looks like your shop is worth more than a card that can look like anything.
  • The colour picker shows you three real stamps in the colour as you choose it, and warns you if the colour is so pale that the stamps will be faint. It does not stop you: it is your colour. The product also works out whether to write black or white on it, so there is no colour you can pick that produces text a customer cannot read.
  • One extra stamp for an email address: on or off, under the shared card. On, the kiosk offers a single extra stamp, once per customer, to anyone who leaves an address. It needs the shared card on, because the offer is made on the kiosk. The stamp is for the address only — never for ticking the offers box, because a yes bought with a reward gives you a list that never opens anything, and in Europe it does not count as permission at all.
  • Everything on this page stays in your browser. Clearing the browser’s data erases it. That is why the folder and the backup file exist.
  • Under Save a backup file, the page shows when the last file was saved. If your browser would not promise to keep the data, a sentence says so: save a file every week on that browser.
  • Spreadsheets of customers, items, daily sales and invoices are listed under the backup buttons. They open in Excel or Numbers. They cannot be restored from; only the backup file can.
  • On your first visit, the sample shop fills the screens with invented figures, so there is something to look at. It is labeled everywhere it appears. It disappears as soon as you type your own figures.
  • Clear all figures takes two steps on purpose. There is no undo.
  • Counter Mode: set the owner’s PIN here, choose whether staff may log the day’s sales while the tablet is locked, and how long it sits idle before locking by itself. See the Counter Mode page.
  • Send usage counts to KANJIN: off unless you tick it. With it on, this browser sends five event names with a count, once each (first stamp, poster printed, a day’s sales logged, kiosk opened, first email sent). Never a figure, a name, a phone number or an email; the server refuses anything else. The Overview asks you once, after your own figures are in.
  • A backup file from an older version of KANJIN restores as it is. A file from a newer version asks you to update this device first. Nothing is thrown away when the app updates.
  • Two tabs of the back office stay in step: a figure logged in one shows in the other as soon as it comes to the front, and neither overwrites the other.
  • Changing the shop’s country once you have customers asks you to tick a box first. Existing phone numbers are not rewritten; only numbers typed from then on are read as the new country’s.

PaidWhat the paid plan changes here

A Marketing section appears at the bottom. It holds the shop’s language and currency as customers see them in emails and on the kiosk, your delivery and booking links, and the kiosk link. It also holds your postal address, your contact email and your first name. Every email KANJIN sends for you carries the address and an unsubscribe link, replies go to the contact email, and nothing is sent until both are filled in. The reward is set on the Counter poster screen. The review email stays on the Reviews tab. It also holds the shop’s time zone: the win-back email goes at 6 pm in it, Slow Day SOS and Rainy day times are read in it, and the daily draft allowance resets at its midnight. Picking the shop’s place on Rainy day sets it; correct it here if it is wrong.
