Open itHow to use it
- Choose your country, your trade and whether you have opened yet.
- Work down the list in order. Press a step to see what to do and where to do it.
- Tick each one as you finish it. Your ticks stay in this browser.
- Come back when you open: the list changes, and the things that only matter once you are trading appear.
What it does
- Pick your country, your kind of shop, and whether you are open yet. The list changes to fit.
- The list is in order. Google first, because most people search there and on Google Maps.
- Every place on the list is free to join. Where a paid extra exists, the step says so.
- Each step shows the date we last checked it and a link to the company’s own help page.
- These companies change their screens often. If a button has a new name, follow their help page.
- Your ticks are saved in this browser only. Nothing is sent to us.
- Getting listed helps people find you. Nobody, including us, can promise a place in search results.
Common questions
- Is it free to put my business on Google Maps?
- Yes. Google says you can add or claim your business at no charge. You need a Google account and about half an hour. Verification can take up to 5 business days. (Checked on 8 October 2026 on Google’s help pages.)
- Can I put my shop on Google before it opens?
- Yes. Set an opening date up to one year ahead. Once you are verified, your profile shows 90 days before that date. Customers cannot leave reviews until you open, but you can add photos and updates. (Checked on 8 October 2026 on Google’s help page.)
- What happens on a Google video call to verify my shop?
- Be at the shop when you start. Google asks you to show the sign outside or the street, the tools or products you use, and a staff-only area such as the kitchen or register. Google then reviews it in up to 5 business days. (Checked on 8 October 2026 on Google’s help page.)
- Can I ask customers for reviews?
- On Google, yes, as long as you offer nothing in return: Google does not allow free or discounted items for reviews. Yelp is different — its rules say not to ask anyone for a review at all. (Checked on 8 October 2026 on Google’s and Yelp’s own pages.)
- Do I need a website or Instagram first?
- No. Google, Apple Maps and Bing all list shops without Instagram, and Apple marks the website as optional. Start with Google, then add the rest when you have time. (Checked on 8 October 2026 on Apple’s help page.)
