How to use it

3. 3Save your figures once in the back office. Then this screen, and every other one, answers for your shop instead of a generic one.

What it does

• Each share is the pool times that person’s hours, divided by everyone’s hours.
• Shares are rounded to the cent, and the leftover cents go one each to the people closest to the next cent, so the total is exact.
• Up to fifteen people. A row with no hours is left out.
• Only hours are used. If your team splits by role or points, agree the rule first; this tool does the hours method.
• Nothing is uploaded. The sums are done in your browser.

Common questions

What is the fairest way to split tips?

By hours worked is the most common, because it is simple and everyone can check it. Some teams weight by role instead. Whatever the rule, write it down and apply it every time.

Can the owner or a manager take part in the tip pool?

Check the rules where you are. In the United States, federal law says owners, managers and supervisors may not keep any part of employees’ tips. Other countries and states have their own rules.

Why do the cents not always split evenly?

Because $100 across three equal shifts is $33.333…, which is not a real amount. This tool gives two people $33.33 and one $33.34, so the total is exactly $100.

Is what I type saved anywhere?

No. Names and hours stay on this page and are gone when you close it.
