Small Business Saturday 2026 Ideas for Small Shops (Plus a Free Gift Certificate Maker)

October 14, 2026 · 13 min read

Short answer

Small Business Saturday is Saturday 28 Nov 2026 in the US and 5 Dec 2026 in the UK, and the ideas that work for a walk-in shop are gift certificates, a stamp card that starts on the day, and one deal checked with arithmetic. As of October 2026, KANJIN (kanjin.app) gives small shops a free printable gift certificate maker with no sign-up, and a free digital stamp card on the customer's phone number with no app, plus 20 Google review requests a month and one free email a month to up to 150 regulars.

It is a Saturday morning in late November. The street is full of people with shopping bags. Most of them walk past your shop, because they do not know it is there. Small Business Saturday is the one day a year when those people are looking for a shop like yours.

This guide is a plan for a walk-in shop. That means a bakery, a boutique, a gift shop, a barber, a nail studio, a bubble tea counter or a cafe. It is for an owner with no budget, no list and maybe no Instagram. Every step has a date. Every worked example is an example: we chose the inputs and show the arithmetic.

The first thing to do is also the simplest. Print a sheet of gift certificates with your shop name on them. The free Gift certificate maker does it in a minute, with no sign-up. A gift certificate is the one thing a small shop sells that often brings in a person who has never been. Someone buys it on the Saturday, and someone new walks in with it in December.

What are the best Small Business Saturday ideas for a small shop?

The best ideas for a walk-in shop bring a new person back a second time: gift certificates at the register, a stamp card that starts on the day, and one deal checked with arithmetic. Posts, flyers and events bring people in on the day, and those three ideas bring them back in December.

When is Small Business Saturday 2026?

In the US, Small Business Saturday is Saturday 28 November 2026, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. American Express started it in 2010, and the US Small Business Administration has cosponsored it since 2011 (SBA, checked October 2026). In the UK, Small Business Saturday is Saturday 5 December 2026 (Small Business Saturday UK, checked October 2026).

If you are in the UK, add one week to every date below. The plan is the same.

6 weeks out (by 17 October): decide what the day is for

Six weeks out, decide 3 things: what you will sell, what you will offer, and what you want to keep after the day. The last one is a customer list.

Print your gift certificates

Open the free Gift certificate maker. Type your shop name and an amount, or a thing like "one haircut" or "one dozen cupcakes". Choose how many, and whether you want 2 or 4 on a page. Press Print and cut along the dotted lines.

Every certificate gets its own code. The codes count up from the number you choose, so no two customers get the same one. Example: you type 20 certificates at $25, 4 to a page, starting at code 001. You get 5 sheets and codes 001 to 020. If you sell out, print a second batch that starts at 021.

It prints in black on white, on A4 or US Letter paper. Nothing you type is sent anywhere, because the certificates are drawn in your browser.

Two choices to make now:

  • The amount. Print some with the amount and some blank. Shops often fill in the blank ones by hand at the register, for a customer who wants $40 instead of $25.
  • The expiry date. Leave it empty. The certificate then says "No expiry date". That is the safe default, because expiry rules differ by state and by country. Check your own rules before you print a date.

Then make a log sheet. One line per code: the code, the date sold, the amount, and a box for "used". The maker does not track this for you. A notebook by the register does it.

Start a stamp card, so the day builds a list

A stamp card gives the Saturday crowd a reason to pick you again in December. Paper works for the first day. The free Stamp card maker prints 4 punch cards on a sheet and a matching counter poster, with no account.

Keep the rule short. Example: a bakery offers "8 stamps and your next loaf is free". A loaf sells for $7 and costs $2.10 to make. A customer who fills the card spends 8 × $7 = $56 and gets back a loaf that costs you $2.10. The reward costs 3.75% of the sales it brought. A 10-stamp card costs 3% but takes longer to fill. For a shop people visit monthly, 5 or 6 stamps is better.

A digital card on the customer's phone number does the same job and writes the list for you. See "Where KANJIN helps" below.

Check your deal with arithmetic before you print it

"20% off everything" is the most common Small Business Saturday deal idea. Check what it costs before you commit to it.

Example: a gift shop expects $2,000 of sales on the Saturday. The average sale is $30, and the goods cost $15. Three facts:

  • If the same people come and simply pay 20% less, you give away $2,000 × 20% = $400. Your costs do not fall, so the $400 comes out of profit.
  • To earn the $400 back, you need extra customers. The formula is (price − cost) ÷ (discounted price − cost) − 1. That is ($30 − $15) ÷ ($24 − $15) − 1 = 0.67. You need 67% more customers than you would have had anyway.
  • Every regular who comes that day learns that your $30 item can be $24.

Compare a different deal: "Spend $50 today and get a $10 gift certificate for December." Example: 40 customers reach $50. Each $10 certificate costs you $5 of goods when it is used. So the deal costs at most $200, and only if every certificate comes back. Each one that comes back is a second visit, often with a friend.

Put your own sale, cost and discount into the free Discount ROI calculator. It shows the profit lost and the extra customers needed, side by side.

Your Google listing

Check your Google Business Profile now. The hours for 28 November must match the sign, and the photos should show the shop in daylight. The other free listings are in how to get customers for a new small shop.

3 weeks out (by 7 November): tell people

Three weeks out, the plan is set and the job is telling people. Most of these ideas cost paper and an hour.

Small Business Saturday flyer ideas

A flyer works when it says 3 things: the date, one reason to come, and where you are. Print 50 and put them where your customers already are.

Flyer Where it goes What it says
Window poster Your own window, 2 weeks before "Small Business Saturday, 28 Nov. Gift certificates at the register."
Half-page flyer The cafe, the gym and the laundromat on your block The date, the one deal, your address and hours
Counter card By your register from today "Ask about gift certificates for the holidays"
Bag insert In every bag from now until the day The date and your stamp card rule

Small Business Saturday post ideas

If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, 4 posts over 3 weeks is enough. Each post shows one real thing.

  1. The gift certificates on the counter. A photo of the printed sheet. "Ready for the holidays. $25 and $50, at the register."
  2. The thing you make. The loaf, the haircut, the nails, the drink. Say the date in the caption.
  3. Your neighbors. A photo of the shop next door. Ask them to post about you the same week.
  4. The day before. Your Saturday hours, and what will be on the counter.

No account? The window poster does the same job.

Small Business Saturday event ideas that cost little

An event is a reason to come in at a set time. Pick one, and put the time on the flyer.

  • A tasting or a demo from 11 to 1. The bakery slices a new loaf. The bubble tea counter pours a winter flavor. The barber shows a beard trim. The nail studio shows the December colors.
  • A shared stamp. Agree with 2 or 3 shops on the block. A customer who visits all of you gets a small gift at the last stop. One flyer lists all the shops.
  • Gift wrapping at the counter. For the gift shop and the boutique, free wrapping is a reason to buy from you instead of a website.

One email to your list

If you have a customer list, send one email about 10 days before. Three lines: the date, what will be on the counter, and that gift certificates are ready. No discount is needed.

The week of (23 to 27 November): get the counter ready

The week of the day is about the counter and the staff. Write 3 scripts and practice them once.

The stamp card script. "Would you like a stamp card? It is just your phone number." Say it to every customer, in the same words. Give the first stamp on the first visit. A card with one stamp comes back.

The gift certificate script. "We have gift certificates, $25 and $50, if you have someone to buy for." Say it while you bag the order. Put the log sheet next to the certificates so the code is written down at the sale.

The review script. "We are a small shop. A Google review helps a lot. The code is on the counter." Ask everyone, offer nothing. No stamp for a review, and no discount for a review. Google asks businesses not to pressure customers for reviews while they are in the shop, so ask lightly and the same way for everyone. The free Google review QR code maker prints a counter card with your own review link.

Also for the week: order 20% more of your top 3 items. Put extra small bills and coins in the register. Add one more person from 11 to 3 if you can.

The day (Saturday 28 November): work the counter

The day has 3 jobs. Open on time. Say the three scripts to every customer. Write down every gift certificate code you sell.

A bonus stamp on the day. A simple idea for a paper card. Write "Two stamps today" on the counter poster, and staff stamp twice on the Saturday. It costs nothing extra.

The second gift. A customer buying a $30 gift often has a second person to buy for. "Would you like a $25 certificate for the other one?"

Photos. Take 5 photos during the day. They are your posts for the next month and your Google profile photos for the year.

Do not add a bigger discount at 2 pm. The regulars who came in the morning paid full price, and they will hear about it.

The Monday after (30 November): count, thank, and plan December

The day is not over on Saturday. Monday is when you find out what it was worth.

Count 5 numbers and write them in a notebook:

  1. Sales for the day, next to a normal Saturday.
  2. Gift certificates sold, and the total amount on them.
  3. New stamp cards handed out.
  4. Google reviews that arrived over the weekend.
  5. How many people said yes to email.

Then do 3 things:

  • Send one thank-you email with your December hours. No offer is needed.
  • Keep the gift certificate log by the register all December. When a certificate comes back, mark it used and give the holder a stamp card. That person has never been in before, and the card is how they come in again.
  • Look at the stamp cards in 3 weeks. Anyone who joined on 28 November and has not been back by Christmas is slipping away. What to do is in why customers stop coming back. A cafe can follow the week-by-week plan in how to market a new coffee shop.

Where KANJIN helps

KANJIN (kanjin.app) is a digital stamp card and back office for small shops. We make it, so read this section with that in mind. Everything above works with paper cards and a notebook. KANJIN does the same steps on a phone or tablet at the counter. It is free, with no time limit and no credit card.

  • A stamp card on the customer's phone number. They type their number at the counter, and the stamp is on. There is no app to install, and any number of customers can join. The Saturday crowd becomes a list on the same day.
  • A Google review button on every customer's card. Each customer's card page has a "Leave a Google review" button, with no monthly cap. KANJIN also emails up to 20 review requests a month, 1 hour after a stamp. Everyone gets the same request, and no reward is attached.
  • One free email a month to up to 150 regulars. The thank-you email on the Monday after is free.

The honest limits. KANJIN does not track gift certificate redemptions. Your log sheet does that. Gift certificate buyers bring new customers. Add them to your free phone-number stamp card so they come back. KANJIN sends email only: no texts and no Wallet pass.

The paid plan is $39 a month per location. It adds the win-back email to a regular who stopped coming, the slow-day and rainy-day emails, and welcome and birthday treats.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Small Business Saturday ideas for a small shop? Gift certificates at the register, a stamp card that starts on the day, one event with a set time, and one deal you have checked with arithmetic. The gift certificate often brings in a person who has never been. The stamp card gives the Saturday crowd a reason to return in December.

What should a small shop post for Small Business Saturday? Four posts over 3 weeks: the printed gift certificates on the counter, the thing you make, a neighboring shop, and your Saturday hours the day before. Each post shows one real photo and names the date. A window poster does the same job for a shop with no account.

Is a 20% off deal worth it on Small Business Saturday? Usually not for the whole shop. In the example above, 20% off $2,000 of sales gives away $400 of profit, and you need 67% more customers to earn it back. A "spend $50, get a $10 gift certificate for December" deal costs less and brings a second visit.

Should gift certificates have an expiry date? The safe default is no expiry date. Rules on gift certificate expiry differ by state and by country, and several places set a minimum period. The free gift certificate maker prints "No expiry date" when you leave the date empty. Check your own rules before you print a date.
